Kathmandu. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has zoomed in on the killing of a journalist in the Gaza Strip as a dreadful event that has astonished the world and calls for immediate action, demanding accountability and justice.
OHCHR spokesperson Thamin al-Khitan said Israeli forces carried out two airstrikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis in a short time. In answering a question about the killing of journalists in the airstrike on Nasser Hospital on Monday, he answered, “We know that one of the five journalists appears to have been killed in the first attack, while three others, including a female journalist, were killed in the second attack. This is a very shocking and excruciating incident.”
He said, “Up to now, at least 247 Palestinian journalists have lost their lives in Gaza since October 7, 2023.” He focused, “Journalists are the eyes and ears for everyone of the world, they must be safe.” Al-Khitan clarified that pointing journalists for killing, targeting hospitals for bombing, is highly prohibited under international law.
At that moment, he also said that although the Israeli occupation authorities have announced that they will investigate these incidents, “these investigations must yield results, there must be justice,” there have been no concrete results or measures of accountability so far. The OHCHR spokesperson also highlighted the fact that the world has not yet seen any concrete results or measures of accountability regarding these killings and that the investigation reports have not been made public.
